When asked in November about the number of elephants claimed by freight trains this past 2010 year, Minister for Environment and Forests, Jairam Ramesh said the government of Assam has recorded a total of only four deaths.
This comes after 7 elephants were killed in September 2010 alone where two baby elephants strayed onto the tracks as five elders followed behind in hopes of guiding them to safety (see photo above).
How many incidents such as these are organizations and/or governments failing to report? And why are the number of deaths being underreported?
On whether any speed limit would be fixed on the movement of trains along the elephant corridor, Mr. Ramesh said it was not possible to implement speed limits in the entire 160 km stretch of railway tract from Siliguri to Alipurduar. However, the Ministry of Railways have introduced a speed limit of 50 km per hour in two vulnerable sections falling in Mahananda and Chapramari wildlife sactuaries.
